Attraction Information

We’re based close to the main entrance of Grosvenor Park famous for its spectacular floral displays, and open-air theatre during the summer.

Your rail adventure follows a quarter mile route around a huge, ornamental lake where wild fowl glide and sail most of the year.

We travel over three level crossings and a magnificent bridge en route before returning to our railway station where you can browse the great range of souvenirs and rail memorabilia on display, and book another ride!

Nearby, there’s an amazing Adventure Playground for children to explore, while The Lodge Cafe at the entrance to the 20-acre park is a great place to relax and enjoy a superb choice of refreshments in an historic venue.

Our fleet of locomotives include our main train GP40, which you can usually see in action every day, plus a No 1 Class 47 Diesel engine, a Romulus-type steam engine and an Electric Tram.

If you love The Railway Children or Thomas The Tank Engine, you’ll be delighted with our train excursion in Grosvenor Park.

Grosvenor Park

After your rail trip, you can explore Grosvenor Park dating from 1867 when it was gifted to the people of Chester by the Grosvenor family.

Its layout was developed by Edward Kemp who was one of the leading figures in the design of parks and gardens during the Victorian era and features some gateways to the city relocated from other parts of Chester.

It also features several buildings designed by the well-known, Chester architect, John Douglas including The Lodge with its distinctive black and white architecture at the main entrance, which now houses a super, little cafe.

The park is a great place to relax and watch the world go by, enjoy a picnic, be entertained by the antics of the squirrels, and play games.

It’s a real horticultural gem and an oasis of calm close to the bustling city-centre.

Nearby Attractions

You’ll find a host of things to see and do in the neighbourhood.

Nearby are St John’s Church and the Ruins.

A place of worship for over 1000 years and Chester’s original Cathedral, it features a stunning Nave displaying the finest example in Europe of the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic as well as an Organ borrowed for the Coronation of Queen Victoria.

Close by, just outside the famous City Walls is the 2000 year old Roman Amphitheatre, the largest arena of its kind in Britain, where 7000 spectators watched circuses, festivals and gladiatorial combat.

Grosvenor Park is located just across the river from The Meadows, an area of grassland and wetlands that you can reach by crossing the huge Suspension Bridge.

During the summer, cattle graze on its lush grasses and help to provide the perfect environment for a range of flora and fauna, the perfect place for wildlife lovers.

Grosvenor Park Miniature Railway is also close to the Bandstand in The Groves, where brass and silver bands and many other musicians perform FREE open-air concerts during the summer, as well as the landing stages for the boat trips that sail up and down the River Dee all year. You can also hire your own rowing boat or pedalo there
