Attraction Information

Chester Tour

The Chester Tour is the perfect way to start any visit to the city as it includes a bit of everything and will give you plenty of ideas as to how you might like to spend the rest of your time in the city. You will be taken on a captivating walk through 2,000 years of history, promenading along a section of the mighty defensive Walls first built by the Romans. You will pass by the impressive cathedral, once a powerful Benedictine Monastery, and at the Eastgate you can marvel at the second most-photographed clock in the country that has become the iconic image of Chester. You can discover unexpected treasures of a bygone era hidden amongst the bustling medieval shopping galleries called the Rows – maybe the remains of the Roman Hypocaust, Medieval cellars and passageways or even a priest hole tucked away in a grand plastered fireplace. Time permitting, you may encounter the Wishing Steps on the Walls and enjoy the beautiful Groves Riverside area along the way. Whatever the weather, your Guide will choose a suitable route tailored to the interests and abilities of the group on the day to ensure you discover the fascinating story of this wonderful city.

Opening times

Daily 10.30am. Also at 2pm Easter to end October.

£7 adults, £6 concessions, £16 families.

Chester Ghost Tour

The Chester Ghost Tour explores the murkier aspects of the city’s 2,000 years of sometimes brutal and bloody history. In so many of the city’s ancient buildings lurks a disturbing, and often tragic tale from days gone by. As well as the central streets, your costumed Guide will lead you to some of the lesser-known and hidden away parts of the city where you will be enthralled with spine-chilling tales of strange goings-on. But be warned: the hauntings are not just from the distant past – all-too-often we receive new reports of unexplained activity. It would seem that hauntings will be with us for eternity…

Opening times

Saturdays at 7.30pm throughout the year. Also Fridays July to September and Thursdays October & November. Additional dates added for Halloween season – see for all dates.

£10 adults, £9 concessions, £25 families.

Secret Chester Castle Tour

The Secret Chester Castle Tour is your key to unlocking the little-known aspects of Chester’s once mighty Norman Castle, first built in 1070 in the days of William the Conqueror. Once the base for Edward I’s conquest of Wales you will hear about the many changes that have taken place here over the years. Discover the Sally Port and Mint in the castle grounds and marvel at the intriguing Medieval wall paintings in the Agricola Tower chapel, before continuing on to discover the original cathedral of Chester, now St John’s church.
