Originally the building was St Mary’s-on-the-hill, a sandstone church dating back to the 14th and 15th century (although there are records of a church on site dating back as far as 1153).  The name originated as a result of its location on the steepest street in Chester, and arguably, England.  On this site, it has been suggested that witches were tried and even rolled down the hill in barrels (a feat that only a witch could survive).  Three witches were buried in the ground of St Mary’s Creative Space in 1656, whilst still a church, and the interior also houses the effigies of the Philip Oldfield, a prominent barrister, and the Gamul family. The space is also blessed with beautiful vibrantly decorated stained glass windows.  St Mary’s Hill is also rumoured to be haunted by a herd of ghostly cattle – although thankfully they have not yet disturbed a performance.

This picturesque hidden gem is now a stunning hub for cultural activity, both indoor and out, close to Chester Castle, and a stone’s throw from the River Dee. There is ample parking at the nearby Castle Square and Little Roodee Car Parks.  Professional artists dovetail with community events to ensure a truly inclusive and cohesive take on cultural planning.

St Mary’s Creative Space is currently being culturally programmed by professional arts organisation Theatre in the Quarter in partnership with many cultural users and Cheshire West and Chester Council. The venue is equipped with adaptable seating and staging to suit the needs of the event, whether it is tiered seating for theatre, a raised stage and tables for cabaret performances, or a complete open space for workshops.

Host to many small scale festivals bringing local artists and communities together with performers from across the country and internationally. These include Christmas at St Mary’s; an eclectic mix of choirs, cabaret, touring theatre or dance, and Chester International Music Week during which St Mary’s played host to choirs, dancers and performers from as far away as China, Zimbabwe, USA and Spain.

St Mary’s, in addition to its established classical concert series curated by Chester Music Society, is also earning a growing reputation for internationally renowned acoustic and singer/songwriter live music, with local promotors Roman Candle and Soundbox attracting artists from across the world.  Recent events have included sets from Michael Chapman (as seen on BBC’s Later with Jools Holland) and Steve Pilgrim (drummer with Paul Waller).
