Chester Walking Tours

Guided walking tours every day of the year

The perfect way to start any visit to Chester is by joining The Chester Tour.  Your guide will lead you on a captivating journey through 2000 years of history taking in all the main sites along the way including the Rows, Walls, River and Cathedral. Be enthralled by the tales and anecdotes of those who have contributed to the rich heritage of this much-loved city, beginning in Roman times, through the vibrant Medieval expansion period, the desperation of the Civil War, the Georgian elegance and the Victorian revival, right up to the present day.

Or you may prefer the Chester Walls Walk during which you follow in the steps of the Roman soldier patrols, the Medieval archers and the elegant Georgian promenaders whilst enjoying a unique perspective of Chester with panoramic views on both sides from this most complete circuit of city walls in the country. See the Water Tower that is no longer next to the water, the remains of the Roman amphitheatre, the tower where Charles I stood to watch the Battle of Rowton Moor, the famous much-photographed clock on the Eastgate, the castle originally built by Chester’s very own “Wolf” and even try your luck on the Wishing Steps  . . .

The Rows Revealed tour offers a unique glimpse into Chester’s Medieval shopping galleries, first built in the days of the great port of Chester and modernised by the Victorians. Discover hidden treasures such as an intriguing priesthole hidden in a fireplace, atmospheric Medieval cellars and passageways, beautifully decorated plasterwork and the ancient remains of a Roman hypocaust.

For the Secret Chester tour, your Guide will grab a set of keys ready to unlock places rarely open to the public as you explore the hidden glories of the city. There are three different routes so your tour could include Medieval wall paintings in a Norman castle tower, a rare example of a camera obscura, a Water Tower with no water or the King Charles Tower which mixes Medieval architecture with a Civil War story and an elegant example of 21st century engineering.

Finally, if you’re brave enough you might dare to join an evening Ghost Tour during which your Guide will take you on a night-time journey around the eerie haunts of Chester’s mysterious and murky past. You will hear spine-chilling tales of ghosts, ghouls and things that go bump in the night! You have been warned . . .

All tours take approximately 90 minutes and they all start from the Town Hall Visitor Information Centre on Northgate Street.
